Tryout Guidelines

The PHA is classified as an ‘AA’ Centre in the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) and therefore the 1stpriority for Representative Teams is to select a ‘AA’ team. Once this has been accomplished, the PHA will then select an ‘A’ level team and then an ‘AE’ or Additional Entry team.  The Pickering Hockey Association (PHA) Representative Team Tryouts will take place in April for the following ages and divisions: Novice to Midget AA, A, AE
Non - Residents Welcome– The Pickering Hockey Association is inviting non-resident players to tryout for PHA teams.  Non-resident players include players currently playing in the LOR Region (Ajax, Markham, Richmond Hill, Brampton, Oakville) and the GTHL (Toronto, Mississauga, Vaughan) . Non-residents are only eligible for ‘AA’ and ‘A’ levels.

Tryout Exemptions and LOR Rules

Players must attend tryouts to be eligible to be rostered to a PHA team.
Should a player miss a tryout without an approved exemption they may not be eligible to be rostered to a team. Should a player have an exemption request denied but still chooses to not tryout for the team, that player cannot be rostered to any PHA Representative or select team for the 2018-2019 season. Tryout exemptions require 48 hours in advance for approval.

LOR Tryout Requirements

  • Players who reside in Pickering from Minor Atom to Peewee MUST tryout for the Pickering Hockey Association (LOR Regulation E48).
  • Players who reside in Pickering from Minor Atom to Peewee who are currently playing on a rep team outside of Pickering MUST return and attend Pickering Hockey Association tryouts. (LOR Regulation E50) (Exception for those players who were grandfathered.

Minor Atom, Atom, Minor PeeWee and Peewee:Any player who resides in Oakville, Brampton, Richmond Hill, Pickering or Ajax. The only exception to this is a player who was registered with the same omha or GTHL team at both Minor Atom in 2016-17 and Atom in 2017-18 or Atom in 2016-17 and Minor Peewee in 2017-18. This player can return to the same team at Minor PeeWee or Peewee respectively without requiring a release. This player has been grandfathered from the LOR changes made in 2017, providing this player remains with the same team. If the player changed teams in either season, or is changing teams for the 2018-19 season, a release from their OMHA LOR Centre is required

  • At Minor Bantam through to Midget the LOR is an open geographic subdivision. All players having graduated the Peewee Division and above may move freely within the LOR. (LOR Regulation E52). A Permission to Skate form is required to move between the OMHA and the GTHL.

Tryout Conduct

  • Players who do not make themselves available for tryouts or who fail to show up to the majority of tryouts will not be provided a release. (LOR Regulation 59).

Player Releases:

  • The Pickering Hockey Association has first right of refusal on Players who reside in Pickering from Minor Atom to Peewee.  Any Pickering player in these age groups will require a release from the PHA before they are eligible to tryout with another team in the LOR. (LOR Regulation E53)
  • Every Player must skate until they are released by the coach, no releases will be provided until after the first tryout and the coach has provided the tryout committee with a release request.
  • No releases for these age groups will be given PRIOR to 2018 spring tryouts
  • A player at Minor Atom to Peewee who is provided a offer from a Team and does not accept it will not be provided a release for that Category. (LOR Regulation E59)

Circumventing a specific division and category or specific Coach.

Myth: I can avoid playing for a certain coach or category (e.g. AAA) by not attending the tryouts and declaring I only want to play at a certain level (e.g. AA instead of AAA).

Truth:  It is expected that if a player is offered a card by their home association at a specific category that player is only eligible to play at that category in representative hockey.  If the player refuses the position offered to them they will not have the option to play representative hockey at another category within their home centre, will not be entitled to a release to another LOR centre and will only be eligible to participate in House League hockey..
